At some point in homeownership, you’re standing in front of an outlet that isn’t working, wondering: Is this a quick fix, or is this something I need to call someone about? The answer depends on what’s actually going on, and making the wrong call in either direction creates real problems.

Outlets seem simple. But behind that plastic cover is a circuit that connects to your home’s entire electrical system, and improperly installed outlets with the wrong-gauge wire, bad connections, and incorrect breaker sizing are among the leading causes of residential electrical fires.

Types of Outlets (And Why the Difference Matters)

Standard 15-Amp Outlets

The most common outlet in any home is a two- or three-prong outlet rated for 15 amps. Most general- use circuits are 15 amps. These are appropriate for lamps, phone chargers, small appliances, and general devices.

20-Amp Outlets

Identified by a horizontal slot alongside one of the vertical slots, 20-amp outlets are required on kitchen countertop circuits and in some other high-demand areas. If your kitchen has standard 15-amp outlets, they may be undersized for the circuits they’re on.

GFCI Outlets (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter)

GFCI outlets have TEST and RESET buttons and are required by code in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, and any area near water. They trip instantly when they detect a current difference between the hot and neutral conductors, which is exactly what happens when electricity is flowing through a person. These outlets save lives, and they need to work correctly. If yours don’t, that’s not optional maintenance.

AFCI Outlets (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter)

AFCI protection is required by modern code in bedrooms and living areas. AFCI devices detect the signature of arcing faults, the kind that occur when wiring is damaged, or connections are loose, before they cause a fire. Older homes in Tulsa often lack AFCI protection entirely.

USB Outlets and Smart Outlets

Convenience upgrades are increasingly common. Installed just like a standard outlet, these straightforward replacements add functionality without changing the circuit.

When It Can Wait

Some outlet situations are nuisances, not emergencies:

  • An outlet that simply stopped working: often a tripped GFCI somewhere upstream, or a tripped breaker
  • An outlet that’s loose in the wall: needs to be re-secured, but not urgent if it’s still functional
  • Wanting to replace two-prong outlets with three-prong throughout the home: important, but plannable
  • Adding outlets to a room that currently doesn’t have enough: a quality-of-life upgrade, schedule when convenient

Why Professional Outlet Installation Matters

A properly installed outlet involves the right wire gauge for the circuit amperage, correct connection tightness (loose connections create heat), proper grounding, correct GFCI or AFCI protection for the location, and work that matches what the breaker in the panel is sized for. Get any of those wrong and you have a potential fire hazard behind your wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace an outlet myself?
Replacing a like-for-like outlet (same type, same location) is a task some experienced DIYers handle. However, installing GFCI outlets where none existed, running new circuits, or any work involving your panel should always be done by a licensed electrician. When in doubt, call; the cost of a professional installation is far less than the cost of a house fire.
GFCI outlets trip in response to a ground fault, which can be caused by a faulty appliance, water near the outlet, or a wiring issue. Press the RESET button firmly. If it won’t reset, the outlet may have failed (they do wear out) or there may be an upstream wiring issue. Call us for a diagnosis.
