The Number of Tulsa EV Owners Is Growing. Is Your Home Ready?
Electric vehicles are no longer a novelty on Tulsa roads. More and more homeowners in Owasso, Broken Arrow, Bixby, and across the metro are plugging in at night instead of stopping at a gas station. And almost universally, the first question after buying an EV is the same one: what do I need to actually charge this thing at home?
The short answer is a dedicated 240V circuit and a Level 2 charger. The longer answer involves your panel, your garage wiring, your city’s permit requirements, and a few choices worth making intentionally.
Level 1 vs. Level 2 Charging: What’s the Difference?
Level 1 Charging
Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V household outlet, the kind you already have. No installation required. The catch: most EVs add only 3–5 miles of range per hour on Level 1. If you drive more than 30–40 miles a day, you’ll wake up to a partially charged vehicle. Level 1 works for plug-in hybrids with small batteries, but most full EV owners find it inadequate within a few weeks.
Level 2 Charging
Level 2 uses a 240V dedicated circuit, the same type of power that runs your dryer or electric range. Most Level 2 chargers add 20–30 miles of range per hour, meaning a nearly empty battery is fully charged overnight. For the vast majority of EV owners, Level 2 is the right choice. It requires an electrician to install a dedicated circuit and, depending on your charger, either a NEMA 14-50 outlet or a hardwired connection.

Will Your Panel Support It?
This is the most common unknown for homeowners. Most modern homes with 200-amp service have capacity for a Level 2 EV charger alongside existing loads. Homes with 100-amp service may need a panel upgrade first, depending on what else is on the system. We assess this during every EV charger consultation, so you’ll know before any work begins.
Hardwired vs. Outlet: Which Should You Choose?
A NEMA 14-50 outlet (the same type used for RV hookups) gives you flexibility. You can plug in different chargers or take your charger with you when you move. A hardwired connection looks cleaner, can be slightly more efficient, and is appropriate if you plan to stay in your home long-term. Both are excellent options; the right answer depends on your situation.
