Older Homes and the Wiring That Comes With Them
Tulsa and Sand Springs have a lot of character housing stock, craftsman bungalows, mid-century ranches, and brick two-stories from the 1950s and 60s. What those homes have in common, beyond their charm, is wiring that was installed decades before smart TVs, home offices, EV chargers, and modern appliance loads existed.
Not every old home needs to be fully rewired. But some do, and knowing the difference between “this can be updated selectively” and “the wiring system needs to be replaced” can save you a significant amount of money and a lot of anxiety.
Types of Older Wiring Found in Tulsa Homes
Knob-and-Tube Wiring
Found in homes built before approximately 1950, knob-and-tube (K&T) wiring uses ceramic knobs to support individual conductors through the framing and ceramic tubes where wires pass through studs and joists. The wiring itself may still function, but the rubber and cloth insulation degrades over decades, becoming brittle, cracked, and eventually unsafe. K&T also lacks a ground conductor, which means no grounding protection for your devices and no compatibility with three-prong outlets. Many insurance companies will not insure homes with active knob-and-tube wiring.
Aluminum Branch Circuit Wiring
Common in homes built between roughly 1965 and 1975, aluminum branch circuit wiring was used as a copper substitute during a period of high copper prices. The problem is that aluminum expands and contracts at a different rate than the steel and brass terminals it connects to. Over time, those connections loosen, creating heat at connection points, a leading cause of electrical fires in this era of housing. Aluminum wiring isn’t always a whole-home rewire scenario, but it does need professional assessment and, at minimum, proper terminations at every device and connection.
Two-Prong (Ungrounded) Wiring
Homes with two-prong outlets throughout were wired without a ground conductor. This isn’t automatically a fire hazard, but it means no protection from electrical faults for your electronics and appliances, and no compatibility with modern devices that rely on grounding for safe operation.
Signs Your Home May Need Rewiring
- Knob-and-tube wiring still active throughout the home
- Aluminum branch circuit wiring with deteriorated or improperly terminated connections
- Persistent circuit problems (tripping, flickering, warm switches) across multiple areas of the home
- A history of electrical work done without permits that can’t be fully documented
- Your insurance carrier is flagging wiring condition as a concern
- You’re doing a major renovation and the wall cavities will be open anyway
What Whole-House Rewiring Involves
A full rewiring project replaces all branch circuit wiring from the panel outward. This involves access to wall cavities, either through existing openings, strategic cuts with patching, or, in a full renovation, open framing. The panel is assessed and often upgraded as part of the project. Every circuit, outlet, switch, and fixture is brought to current code.
The scope is significant, but so is the outcome: a home with modern wiring, a properly sized panel, grounded outlets throughout, GFCI and AFCI protection where required, and a clean electrical inspection record.
